Formula D is a motor racing board game with easy rules to learn, includes two game board/circuits, 20 painted cars, marker and gear sticks, dice and player dashboards. Run anything from a single lap to a full racing season if you have the time!
in Formula D, players have to use a significant amount of planning to win, and also need a bit of luck. Each player manages when to shift gears, with each gear providing a different speed. (For example, 4th gear is a die that rolls random numbers from 7 to 12 for spaces moved.) Each turn, players may move up one gear, stay in that gear, or move down gears. This forces players to match possible rolls with the optimum distance for that turn, and hopefully plan ahead. Corners have a “stop” rule that requires players to stop a number of times in consecutive turns or face a penalty. This creates an effective speed limit to the corners.
Penalties apply in terms of car attributes (tyre wear, brake wear, transmission and so on) if you miss a roll, hit another car, have to brake heavily, shift down several gears, etc. Losing the maximum in any of these categories could result in retiring from the race.
You can also customize your cars, use a pre-generated character, add slipstreaming rules and road debris, and change tyre types to modify your distance rolls. There are also variations for a single lap race, or multiple laps with pit stops to repair some of your damage points.
Plays in about an hour, for 8 years and up, 2 to 10 players. If you like racing cars and boardgames this is one for you.
