Dixit is the 2010 Spiel des Jahres Winner. Each player, as storyteller, takes a turn at describing a card from their hand. Being not too obvious, but not too cryptic either. Everyone lays down a card on the table, which are shuffled around and laid out face up. Every player has to vote on which picture was the storyteller’s, if everyone guesses wrong, or everyone guesses correctly, the storyteller scores zero for that round, and the other players score 2 each. Otherwise the storyteller and all of those who found the correct answer score 3. If as non-storyteller you trick someone into voting for your card, you score a point too. 3-6 players, takes about 30 minutes, for ages 6 and up.
This is the original Dixit base game, not the Odyssey, Jinx etc. versions.

Strategy tip: When you are the Dixit story teller you only have to find one person amongst the rest of the players who is on your wavelength. So you can certainly reference something that you’re pretty sure your partner or another family member will “get”, but nobody else around the table will. That way you both score 3 points. The risk is that they DON’T get it – if you targeted your partner with a clue which is too obscure for everyone else as well as your partner, you get nothing and everyone else gets 2 points. So be sure of your ground before following this path. You may be better to give a more general clue (but being too explicit runs the same risk!).
